EDIS: A Look Back
From domain registrar to a comprehensive hosting platform
Over the years, EDIS has developed into a versatile web hosting and cloud platform. Personal service, experience and technical expertise have shaped that journey.
EDIS Through the Years
- 1999: Sole proprietorship founded on 16 February 1999.
- 2000: Accreditation as a nic.at domain registrar.
- 2001: Foundation laid for the company’s own data centre in Graz, Austria.
- 2004: First Austrian provider to offer virtualisation products using User-mode Linux (UML); first international customers acquired.
- 2005: First Austrian web hosting provider with its own gigabit uplinks.
- 2008: Business reorganised as EDIS GmbH.
- 2011: Relaunch of virtualisation products using Linux vServer containers and KVM; successful expansion into international markets.
- 2012: Market leader in context-based servers in Austria and Switzerland.
- 2013: Construction of its own fibre backbone with redundant connections via Vienna.
- 2013: First Austrian web hosting provider with its own 10-gigabit backbone.
- 2013: Core infrastructure moved from Graz to Vienna.
- 2013: Own infrastructure in more than 17 countries, including Russia, Chile, Hong Kong, Iceland, Sweden, Switzerland, the Isle of Man and the USA.
- 2014: Acquisition of the domain and hosting business of IFO.net GmbH.
- 2014: Acquisition of the domain and hosting business of Kyberna AG in Liechtenstein.
- 2016: Introduction of Let’s Encrypt SSL in web hosting.
- 2017: Launch of the EDIS website builder.
- 2017: Own infrastructure in 25 countries.
- 2018: Development of a new self-service platform.
- 2019: Own infrastructure in 35 countries, with growth mainly in Asia-Pacific, the Mediterranean and southern and eastern Europe.
- 2020: Zero-downtime web hosting with horizontal scaling, NVMe Ceph storage and a focus on hosting platforms, CDN, Elasticsearch and S3.
- 2021: Web hosting and server infrastructure in 40 countries.
- 2023: The VPS business division was spun off into a separate company.
